The Chairman Dances
Location: Philadelphia, PA
The Chairman Dances is an art rock band hailing from Philadelphia. Since the June 2014 release of The Death of Samuel Miller, the group has toured the northeast opening for Liam Finn, Work Drugs, and Spottiswoode and His Enemies.

The Chairman Dances teamed up with Daniel Smith (Sufjan Stevens) to record their newest release, Samantha Says, an EP brimming with catchy, gender-bending pop. The release follows less than a year after their 2014 LP, The Death of Samuel Miller (Grizzly Records), and establishes the group as prolific musical storytellers, artfully crafting rock and orchestral arrangements to add color and tone to a narrative voice. They have been dubbed "indie rock literati" (WXPN) for their approach to songwriting.

“Im looking for a man…with manners and insurance,” sings lead vocalist Eric Krewson. Elsewhere he declares, “I found myself the joyful mother of children.” Krewson writes from the point of view of Samantha, the EPs titular character, but the gender confusion, paired with the tongue-in-cheek humor, lends depth to these songs about corrosive long-term relationships, friendship, and motherhood. Samantha herself is a fully formed protagonist. Shes equal parts smart, witty, beloved, depressed and lonely. In "Self-Portrait" we hear: "Now Im forlorn, now Im lucid, now Im sobbing, half-awake." Her contradictory postures make her as real and as compelling as any literary heroine.
